RAISE OF PERSONAL CONTRIBUTION MEDICACION

You may have already heard or read in the media that a new regulation in relation to a personal contribution towards the cost of drugs has taken effect from 1 July 2012 for people insured via the Seguridad Social.

As all our clients will be affected by this, we would like to make sure that everyone is informed.

The essence of the new regulation is that the personal contribution towards the cost of drugs will be related to the annual income of the insured. This will be updated on a yearly basis.

People insured via the Seguridad Social and falling under the category “retired” as from the 1st of July are required to pay 10% towards the cost of drugs. This will be the case while the income details of all insured will be entered and a precise percentage will be determined.

For those insured via the Seguridad Social but not falling under the category “retired”, the own contribution will be:

a)      60% of the cost of the drugs when the annual income is more than 100,000 euros

b)      50% of the cost of the drugs when the annual income is between 18,000 and 100,000 euros

c)      40% of the cost of the drugs when the annual income is less than 18,000 euros

If the drugs are for an illness with a chronic character, the own contribution may be less or nil. The Seguridad Social will make this decision.

The full text of the regulation can be found in the government gazette (BOE) under “Real Decreto-Ley 16/2012” and more information can be found on the internet by searching for “copago farmaceutico”.
